Brief

Millennium Galleries wanted a visual identity for their 2024 events calendar. The exhibition was international street art, everything from protest work to random fun stuff by brilliant artists.

Approach

My first instinct was bright colour on dull grounds, the contrast you actually see on the street when spray paint hits a run-down building. I tested it and dropped it. The second route pushed one strong pink against black with areas of white.

What I ended up with was neither. I ran warm and cold colours across the whole set, because the exhibition is international and one palette would have made it look like it came from one place. The mark is a raised fist built entirely out of bubble letters spelling the exhibition name, so the protest and the lettering are the same shape.

I rolled it out over hanging gallery banners, posters, an A-board, wayfinding icons and a temporary tattoo, and tested each colourway on a real gallery frontage.

Outcome

A full identity: banners, posters, signage, icons and applications.
