The Student Cookbook
Redesigning a dull cookbook so it stops talking down to the people using it.
Redesign the outdated Hamlyn student cookbook so it actually appeals to students.
The problem with the original was the tone. It looked like a reference manual for people who already knew how to cook. So I made it look handmade instead: collage illustrations built from cut-out engravings, scanned line drawings and hard blocks of colour, which reads as something put together rather than art-directed, and that's closer to how students actually eat.
The structure does the rest. 30-minute recipes, sorted into Morning, Lunch, Afternoon and Specials, with page numbers big enough to find while you're holding a pan. Yellow, blue and black all the way through, loud enough to survive a kitchen.
